An independent film that will dramatize President Barack Obama's first date with Michelle Obama is in development.
Producer Stephanie Allain confirmed Monday that she and Tracey Bing are producing "Southside With You," a drama about the first summer afternoon the Obamas spent together. Tika Sumpter will play the future first lady. The search is on for an actor to play the young president-to-be.
Richard Tanne will write and direct the film.
The Obamas' first date took place in 1989 in Chicago, visiting the Art Institute of Chicago and going to see Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing." At the time, both were working at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin.
Deadline Hollywood first reported on the plans for the film.
