Opera and Dance Drama Theater of Hunan Province

The Opera and Dance Drama Theater of Hunan Province was founded in 1953. The theater has staged a lot of outstanding programs with distinctive ethnic and local flavor, such as ethnic mythical dance drama Liu Hai Cuts Firewood, large-scale song and dance Ode to Wind and Thunder, revolutionary historical dance drama Rid Tassels, large-scale song and dance Customs in the Xiaoxiang River Valley, Red Azaleas in Hunan, Mountain Breeze, Rhyames of Changdao Islanders, song and dance The Dong Ethnic Village. Prize-winners in national professional competitions include dances Monkey Drums, Farmer and Snake, The Ba People, Laughter, Moonlit Evening, Miao Drumbeats, Songs of the Mountaineers, songs Dongting Lake, a Land of Fish and Rice, Go To Beijing with a Load of Tea Leaves, Small Back Basket, instrumental music Night of the Dong Village, Carnival in the Miao Village. The Theater's new dance drama Border Town won the 6th Wenhua Award and the Cao Yu Drama Award in 1994. The theater has toured Japan, DPR Korea, Italy, Poland, 7 Africa countries and Hong Kong region where the artists' performances were warmly received.

Over the past 40 years, a large number of influential artists have worked for the theater. Among them are singer He Jiguang; composer Liu Zhengqiu, Zhang Jielin, Yang Tianjie and Li Yang; directors Wang Duanyi, Wang Xiaoyuan and Pan Yunyun; choreographer Yuan Rongming; yong dancers Yang Xia, Liu Yuebo; musician Yang Ming; second grade conductor Xiao Ming. The theater has all together about 60 actors and actresses with above second grade professional certificates and with the State's Special Subsidy. The artists have won about 100 awards in provincial and national contests.
