The Advance Acrobatic Troupe of the Political Department of Shenyang Military Region was founded in December 1949.
Over the past 50 years, the troupe has created a large number of remarkable programs and has attended many national and international acrobatic contests on behalf of the army and the country respectively. Acrobats of the Troupe have won l01 medals, including 6 international golden medals. For example, Plate Spinning won the gold prize at the Warsaw World Youth Festival. Lion Dance and Trick-cycling by Girls won the President Awards of Les Huitieme et Neut Festivals Mondialaux du Cirque de L'Avenir in France. Jumping Through the Rings won the Gold Clown Award of the 12th Monte Carlo International Circus Festival. It became the first Chinese acrobatic troupe to win three top prizes at international acrobatic contests. Its Juggling Umbrellas with Feet and Balancing Skills on a Swing won the gold prizes at the Swedish and Belgium International Youth Circus and Acrobatic Contests respectively in 1996 and 1998.
Throughout the years, the troupe has toured 49 countries and regions spreading the art of Chinese acrobatics and promoting international cultural exchanges. In particular, the troupe toured the U.S. in November 1972 with the permission by Premier Zhou Enlai, becoming the first Chinese art troupe to visit the United States immediately after the Ping-pong Diplomacy. The visit contributed to the increase of mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and to the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Major acrobats of the troupe include Zhang Jinfang, Wang Xilin, Huang Wenxia, He Lindi, Liu Jinjia, Zhang Xing, Zhang Dehua, Zhang Dezhen, Wang Luming, Zhao Jun, Wang Chunhua, Dong Zhenzhen and Ji Lianyun.
