Ming Hwa Yuan Gezai Opera Company

Since its founding in 1929, Ming Hwa Yuan has played an important role in the development of Gezai opera over the past 70 years.

Despite initial hardships, the prohibition of Gezai opera during the Japanese occupation, and a short postwar revival, Ming Hwa Yuan weathered a decline in the opera during the 1960s and 1970s. Following its subsequent transformation and widespread success during the 1980s and 1990s, Ming Hwa Yuan has evolved into a theatre group that boast a performance style that is unique to the company's development and direction. With its bold use of color and set design, exciting and vibrant action, strong emphasis on innovation as well as scripts that resonates contemporary age, Ming Hwa Yuan has become one of the most popular Gezai opera companies in Taiwan.

Over the years, Mina Hwa Yuan's had hard work to promote Gezai opera as one of the important performance arts of Taiwan. There are now more than 200 performances every year. Apart from local venue, the company has also toured Japan, Southeast Asia, France and the United States. The company participated in the art festival of the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing.
