Workshop on traditional embroidery of Yi people from Southwest China has become a new attraction for Shanghai locals. Ma Suying, one of the volunteers from Yunnan province, offers practice lessons for embroidery lovers. Since 2017, Ma has been working with local volunteer organizations, which train embroiders and also produce handicrafts for urban dwellers.
Yi embroidery, one of China's intangible cultural heritages, dates back one thousand years. Featuring bold colors such as red, yellow and black, traditional Yi embroidery celebrates totems and time-honored customs.
