The 2019 Shanghai Book Fair, one of the largest of its kind in China, opened at the Shanghai Exhibition Center on Wednesday.
This is the 16th year that the week-long event is being held. Between Aug 14 and 20, more than 1,000 reading events will also be held in the city and bookstores across the country, marking the first time the fair is extended to other cities and provinces.
This year, publishers have brought 160,000 titles to the fair. One of the highlights of this year’s event is a series of exhibitions on books themed around the 70th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China. One such exhibition features books explaining the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and celebrates the founding of the country.
Another exhibition features the compiling process of China’s most authoritative dictionaries, such as Cihai, or The Sea of Words.
