Originally named as "Chunzai Tower", the Engraving Building is located at the west Dongshan Town, 40 kilometers southwest to Suzhou City. The construction of the building began in 1922 and was finished three years later, with a total expense of 3741 Liang (about 187 kg) of gold. It imitated the architectural style of manors in the Ming Dynasty, reflecting the masterful traditional architectural workmanship in South China.

The traditional Chinese architecture emphasizes on carved beams and painted pillars, so as to highlight the noble temperament, and in this aspect, the Engraving Building reaches perfection. Incorporating the skills of relief, freestanding, pierced carving and negative and undercut carving, the craftsmen carved exquisite patterns out of various sorts of building materials. Chunzai Tower is the main body of the whole building, where the distribution density of all kinds of carvings is among the highest in the world. The carved brick archway facing against Chunzai Tower is separated into three sections, the upper, the middle and the lower. In this confined space of less than three square meters, many objects such as lucid ganoderma (Lingzhi), peony, chrysanthemum, orchid, guava, bat, citron, auspicious clouds, etc. are carved in relief, delivering the connotation of longevity, prosperity, fertility, good luck and blessing. On the middle of the ridge placed a square box planted with Chinagreen herb, which is sculptured with portraits of "Be the Champion" and "Bring in Wealth", expressing the owner's wish of good luck. Looking from inside, the other side of the archway is engraved with the images of "The Eight Immortals Offering Birthday Peaches and Toasts", "The Scene of Ten Deer in Different Gestures" and "Offering Birthday Felicitations to Guo Ziyi", which signifies luck, fortune and health respectively. The superb carvings on the archway are the part with the highest artistic value of the whole building.

With its exquisite carvings, the Engraving Building is well worth its fame as "The No. 1 Tower in South China".
