Kaishan Island spans 13,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of two football fields.
Although the island is relatively small, it served as military fortress in history. At the beginning of World War II, invading Japanese navy docked at Kaishan Island to occupy the port of Lianyungang. The island was developed as a military base to secure war supplies such as coal, iron ore, salt and grain.
Multimedia journalist Lester Xu extended his reach to the abandoned island of Kaishan to explore the secret life of the remaining two island keepers.
