A decade ago dancer Yang Liping created the dance sensation Dynamic Yunnan. Since then the show has proved tremendously successful both here and abroad. And Yang has just treated audiences to an updated version of the hit show, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its debut.
The new version of Dynamic Yunnan was staged in a theatre which seats only 600 people. It seems that Yang Liping wanted to share the debut of this updated version of the show with only friends and a limited number of die-hard fans.
Lighting, sound and stage design have all been modified for this latest version- which was met with thunderous applause by the enthusiastic crowd. But ten years ago, the response couldn’t have been more different.

Yang Liping, Dancer and Procuder of Dynamic Yunnan, said, "Back in 2003, it was during the SARS outbreak. Not a single person came to watch the debut of the show! So that became a dress-rehearsal."
The show was a labour of love for Yang, who spent three years trekking ten thousand kilometres to choose actors and actresses, along with collecting props including folk instruments for the piece. But because of the SARS outbreak, the show struggled financially and the group were close to disbanding.
