Art Beat: Concert

Daddy daughter duo

Celebrated cellist Mischa Maisky hopes to dazzle with his passionate performance in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

Maisky catches people's attention with his appearance. He has a huge mustache and frizzled long gray hair, and wears crumpled tuxedos.

His performance style is as wild as his appearance. He's known for energetic shows, featuring exaggerated movements.

He deeply admires Bach. His career highlight came when he staged a worldwide Bach tour of more than 100 concerts in 2000.

Maisky's recordings have won the Record Academy Prize in Tokyo five times and Grammy nominations.

The cellist will perform with his daughter, longtime performance partner and rising pianist, Lily Maisky.

8 pm, May 27. Opera Hall of Guangzhou Opera House, Exit B1 of Zhujiang New Town subway station at the interchange of subway lines 3 and line 5, Guangzhou. 020-3839-2888.

Jazz it up

Beijing Jungle Big Band, one of the best jazz bands in town, will team up with a choir and three sopranos for a concert featuring Chinese folk and Western religious songs.

They will perform such heavenly melodies as The Pledge, Panis Angelicus, The Holy City and Chinese pieces including Flower in Water, My Life and Woman's Song.

Comprising five saxophonists, four trombone players, four trumpet players, a drummer, a pianist, a bassist and a guitarist, the 7-year-old group is China's biggest jazz band.

Soprano Wang Feifei is one of the leading singers in China specializing in crossover music. She learned Chinese folk music at a young age and later explored Western singing style. Flower in Water is her trademark song.
