A group of contemporary Chinese painters on Tuesday exhibited their re-defined ink wash paintings in the Royal College of Art in London.
The five Chinese artists, Chang Jin, Shen Qin, Wu Xiangyun, Zhang Zhengmin and Zhu Jianzhong, showed 29 paintings defined as "contemporary ink wash paintings," combining traditional technique with modern expression.
Shan Sheng, president of UK Chinese Association for the Promotion of National Reunification, said at the opening ceremony that "the paintings displayed today are quite different from those traditional works, which is a sign of innovation and progress."
Katie Hill, a scholar on the subject of contemporary Chinese art, said the exhibition is part of China-Britain culture exchange, and is a good opportunity for British audiences to learn about contemporary Chinese ink wash paintings.
Zhu Jianzhong, one of the artists exhibiting their paintings, said: "Thousands of painters in China now still follow the method of ancient artists from hundred years ago when drawing ink wash paintings. But a group of Chinese painters have begun to re-invent or re-think ink wash paintings."
The exhibition will continue until Aug. 24.
