In the Ancient Roman Theater in Plovdiv on Saturday evening, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra gave its first concert in Bulgaria, impressing the local public.
The orchestra, one of the best in China, performed an overture to the opera The Mastersingers of Nuremberg by Wagner, The Firebird Suite by Stravinsky, and Ode to Humanity for Chorus and Orchestra by Wang Ning, to and audience of 3000.
The nearly two-hour performance was dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and China.
Light rain interrupted the show for a short while. During the break, a trumpeter from the orchestra invited the audience to sing some Bulgarian song and he accompanied the unknown melody.
Spectators called for three encores.
Ivan Totev, Mayor of Plovdiv, told Xinhua that Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra demonstrated impressive professionalism and contributed to the convergence of the two cities, which this year signed a twinning agreement.
