The 2014 Cross-Strait Lacquer Art Exhibition opened at the National Art Museum of China on Nov 29. Experts, scholars, artists and officials from both sides of the Strait attended the opening ceremony, aiming to strengthen the traditional cultural inheritance and preservation.

Themed on lacquer arts, this exhibition attracted more than 40 scholars and artists who shared views on how to preserve traditional cultural values and promote modern culture.

Chen Qiuping, director of the Fujian Provincial Department of Culture, said a total 280 exhibits were selected from 1,800 lacquer art works by artists from both sides of the Strait. These exquisite works not only are the carriers of the cultural treasures alongside the ancient Silk Road, but also show that Taiwanese culture is part of Chinese culture.

According to Xu Li, secretary general of the China National Academy of Arts, lacquer art originated in China and can be tracked back 7,000 years. It is one of the representative symbols of China’s traditional culture. Lacquer art from both sides, based on co-existence and co-prosperity, integrates traditional materials and skills with innovation.

This event, co-organized by the China National Academy of Arts, China Artists Association, National Art Museum of China and Fujian Provincial Department of Culture, will be open until Dec 11. It is the largest cultural and art exchange event so far between the two sides of the Strait.
