Walnuts
( 2005-09-13 )

TheXinjiangUygur Autonomous Region of Northwest China is one of China's earliest walnut-producing areas. Xinjiang's big-sized and thin-skinned walnuts, which are called Yanggak by the Uygurs, ripen early and have high oil content.

Xinjiang walnuts have a rich nutrition level that is 7 times higher than that of beef of the same weight. Xinjiang walnuts contain vegetable oil (75-80 percent), protein (16 percent), and carbohydrate (10 percent), as well as vitamins A, B, B2, C, E, K, and so on.

The walnuts can build up vital energy and nourish the blood, moisten the respiratory tract, reduce phlegm, cure pulmonary tuberculosis, and exert a restorative influence on the intestines.

The oases around the Tarim Basin are the main producing areas of walnuts, with Hotan as the largest producing region in Xinjiang.
