 Xinjiang was established as a province in Northwest China in 1884 and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was founded on October 1st, 1955 to replace the provincial system, with Urumqi as its capital.
The administrative division consists of 13 prefectures and regions (5 autonomous prefectures and 8 regions), 19 municipalities (3 municipalities directly under the Xinjiang People's Government, 9 municipalities directly under regional people's government, 7 municipalities directly under autonomous prefecture governments), and 68 counties (6 autonomous counties, 849 townships and towns (42 national townships).
