Founded in 1958, the Tianjin Conservatory of Music was then called Hebei Conservatory of Music. It was set up on the base left behind by the Central Conservatory of Music when it moved from Tianjin to Beijing. The current president of the conservatory is Yao Shengchang, who succeeded the former president, Miao Tianrui.

The Conservatory now consists of departments in theory composition, vocal music, piano, folk instrumental music and musical education, including short-term training courses, advanced study courses, an attached middle school, etc. The conservatory accepts undergraduates for a masters degree.
