Sales at the Hanhai Spring Auction totaled 300 million yuan the first day on June 5. Qi Baishi's painting "Four Follower Screens" was sold at a price of 57.1 million yuan.
Qi's works, ranked third last year in terms of artwork sales have great influence in the art market. Bidding on the "Four Follower Screens" started at a price of 7 million yuan and hit the final price after several rounds of bidding.
Qi painted Phalaenopsis amabilis, millet, towel gourd and maple leaves on each of the screens with strong colors rarely seen in artwork. Everything on the screens seems to be realistic and captures the spirit of village life. Also, many insects, such as dragonflies and locusts, on the painting reflect the image of autumn.
Besides Qi's works, the auction also put up works by Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Li Keran and so on. Of the calligraphy works, one of Liang Qichao's works was sold for 1.3 million yuan, a personal record.
