Hollywood Rivalry

Though the film has not wrapped up, director Feng said he is satisfied with his project, planned for release at the end of this year. Feng's focus for next year will be on the comedy, Siren Dingzhi.

Wang remains optimistic about the film industry at home. " About 94 percent of Chinese theaters screen Hollywood films. But soon, films from domestic directors will end the monopoly."

Drawing audiences

Optimism coming from film companies is not enough, audiences must be convinced. "Parading around famous directors and movie stars is just a way movie companies hope to lure audiences," said Tan Fei, a movie critic.

But Tan said he looks forward to Feng Xiaogang's Wengu 1942, Wong Karwai's The Grand Masters and Chen Kaige's, Search by Search.

Only a few new domestic films are 3D, which Tan believes is a wise choice. "3D technology in China is not mature enough. We've tried following this trend in the past, with unsuccessful results," said Tan.

Tan is also concerned about the quality of work produced between Chinese and international film groups.

"There are many cultural differences. Reaching a mutual understanding is a difficult task during the filming and production process," Tan said.

Tan dismisses the influx of new Hollywood films replacing Chinese productions. "Chinese audiences enjoy watching domestic films, because these films resonate in our daily lives."

Tan's opinion is echoed by Chen Shan, a professor at Beijing Film Academy. Both agree that Chinese movie companies should put forth the best to counter Hollywood blockbusters.

"Movies must pay attention to the quality of the script," Chen said. "After all, movies are more than just moving images."

"Chinese films should acknowledge and examine the country's history. China's past is sumptuous, and we are surrounded by valuable cultural reminders everyday. We should use this as a running trope for our films," Chen said.
