Henk van der Meijden is one of the most successful impresarios and circus directors in Europe.
He has had a very good relationship with Chinese culture for over twenty-five years. He brought the Xian Ballet and Peking Opera groups to Europe several times.
He has presented a European tour of Chinese acrobatic groups from Wuhan, Guandong, Dalian, Liaoning, Kunming, etc. almost every year since 1987.
He was the first impresario to present the Chinese Circus in Europe in a tent, which subsequently had a lot of following globally.
Van der Meijden also worked intensively with his wife Monica Strotmann on the development of the Chinese Circus.
In collaboration with the groups, circus theme programmes were established, such as Yin Yang, Pirates Pirates, Zensation, Hans Christian Andersen, Confucius, etc.
More attention was also paid to music, choreography and costumes so that the Chinese Circus really became culture and art: Total Theatre, in other words.
Van der Meijden started forty years ago with the Russian State Circus and works closely, even now, with the National Circus of Pyongyang. Van der Meijden and his wife were jury members of the Circus Festival of Monte Carlo repeatedly. Van der Meijden also brought the famed Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballet to Europe several times.
