Cooperation between the Chinese and Western film industries has influenced the development of China’s indigenous film culture. According to Ren Zhonglun, president of the Shanghai Film Group, cooperation has gone beyond funding, location and licensing to encompass a greater range of creative partnerships. For instance, when Stephen Spielberg shot Empire of the Sun in Shanghai in March 1987, his Chinese partner was only responsible for providing venues and facilities. But by 2008, during the making of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the Chinese partner was much more involved in actual production.
There is still plenty of scope for cooperative efforts to be deepened. Doing so will benefit Chinese film and allow the nation’s filmmakers a world stage on which to exhibit the country’s unique cultural heritage.
