Over the last few years in China, some social problems such as a tainted milk incident which affected tens of thousands babies, have caused major social concerns. Liang Xiaosheng, a writer known as the “Voice of the Grassroots,” believes that on one hand society has to provide greater moral guidance to show people how to lead a meaningful life, which he elaborates upon in his newly-published bookWhat do you lack, Chinese people?, but on the other, he also said improvements have been made in strengthening individual attitudes.
"I hope my child will read more of your books and understand society better," a mother of a small girl told Liang at an event where he met with Beijing readers in November.
Most of those in attendance at the event were students who were also there with their parents. The 64-year-old writer said that some of China’s social problems are due to a lack of values.
But he also admitted there have been some improvements with the attitudes of others.
"People now have self-awareness, an awareness of their rights and a sense of participation, which are all very important," he said.
Although Liang said societal problems still exist, he believes that China is changing, and even though it may take some time, reading the Chinese and international classic literary works can help people become more compassionate, cultured and humane.
