A total of 36 sinologists from 17 countries arrived in Beijing on December 3 to attend the Symposium of Sinologists and International Cultural Dialogue. The sino-scholars came to discuss and promote the global development of Chinese culture while focusing on three topics that included the commonalities and differences in cultural exchanges, the translation of contemporary Chinese literature, and the status quo of Chinese literature upon the world’s literary stage.

Experts from home and abroad agreed that sinology studies have developed globally.

Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer, a Sinology professor at Georg-August-University of Goettingen in Germany said there has been a transformation of China studies in Germany. “Early sinologists in the 19th century directed their study of China toward reconstructing the past, but currently specialists are to a large extent oriented toward studying the present China, including its literature, economy, judicial system and political reforms.”

Zhang Xiping, a professor of overseas sinology studies in China said that domestic sinologists have paid enough attention to their foreign counterparts, an essential group in such studies and vice versa, although not historically.

Hosted by the Ministry of Culture in China, the event will conclude on December 4.
