June 14 marks China’s 9th annual Cultural Heritage Day. The Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Civil Affairs and relevant departments are holding celebration activities in downtown Beijing.
The events include live performances, contests, exhibitions on calligraphy, painting and ceramics. The activities are intended to encourage citizens to be more aware of the need to preserve China’s cultural heritage and ancient relics.
The Chinese central government declared in 2005 that the second Saturday of June would be celebrated as Cultural Heritage Day each year, in order to promote the protection of the country’s rich cultural resources. This year’s theme is "Protecting culture heritage and urbanization".
