China’s Vice-Premier Liu Yandong inspected the China Cultural Center in Paris on Sept 18, and visited the exhibition of renowned Chinese artist Wu Guanzhong. The exhibition, themed Surpassing and Integrating, was inaugurated on the same day in the cultural center. Liu also listened to the briefing of the center’s principal at a seminar on the development of the overseas China cultural center, and delivered an important speech.

Vice-Premier Liu Yandong and Claude Abeille, President of the French Academy of Fine Arts, unveiled Wu Weishan’s large-scale sculptures Confucius Asking for “Dao (principles)” and Lao Zi (founder of Taoism) in the cultural center. They also checked the outcomes of the cultural center trainees’ Chinese learning, watched a few scenes from the traditional Chinese opera Hua Wei Mei (Flower is a Go-between) and a traditional Chinese music performance, and saw calligraphy and painting works from trainees. After these activities, they visited the Wu Guanzhong painting exhibition.

The late famous painter Wu Guanzhong traveled to France to study at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1947. Deeply influenced by modern painting, Wu devoted all his lifetime to exploring ways to combine western arts and Chinese arts. He opened the door to the Chinese modern painting revolution and enjoyed the honorary title of cultural ambassador between China and France. Wu was made an officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture in 1991 and awarded the Golden Medal Paris by the Paris government in 1993. He became an academician of the French Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. Forty-five works by Wu were displayed in the exhibition.
