Xu Lin, General Director of "Hanban" and Chief Executive of the "Confucius Institute" Headquarters in China, was awarded on Saturday the title "Doctor Honoris Causa" of the University of Bucharest.

"We are honoring today the exceptional work of Madame Xu Lin in the field of education and her efforts and achievements in promoting Chinese language and culture as head of Confucius Institutes," said Prof. Dr. Vlad Nistor, President of the Senate of the University of Bucharest.

"This is a special day for me. I will do my best to continue to promote Chinese culture and bilateral cultural exchanges, as well as to improve research in the Confucius Institutes," said Xu Lin.

Xu Lin has had an intense activity in education in China and also on international level for the last decades, the Laudatio highlighted her professional background and her achievements in the development of friendship and cooperation between Romania and China.

It is the third distinctions she received from universities in Romania. She was awarded the title of "Doctor Honoris Causa" a day before by Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu. She got another one by Babes Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca in 2011.

As a leader of the institution which manages all the "Confucius Institutes" around the world, Xu Lin has contributed to the establishment of the four Institutes in Romania - Sibiu, Cluj Napoca, Brasov, Bucharest - and also of the two Confucius classrooms from Constanta and Deva.

She supported the development of these entities for initiating research projects, elaborating text books and organising scientific events. Hanban sends teachers of Chinese language to Romanian schools and universities, offers scholarships for students, provides material support, consisting in equipment, donations of books and teaching materials.

The "Confucius Institute" at the University of Bucharest opened almost one year ago, being a continuation of the previous department for Chinese language and culture studies, which has been functioning at the University of Bucharest since 1956.

Over the decades, many students were able to study in China and many books about Chinese culture and philosophy were translated into Romanian language.

"The Confucius Institute is a natural continuation of the work that has been done by generations of professors. The relation we have with Hanban is very important for the University of Bucharest, because it allows a connection with universities in China and from all over the world. We congratulate Madame Xu Lin for receiving this high degree," said Prof. Dr. Mircea Dumitru, Rector of the University of Bucharest.

"Confucius Institute" at the University of Bucharest is the result of the partnership between University of Bucharest and China University of Political Science and Law. It is a platform for cultural exchange, as well as a bridge for reinforcing friendship and cooperation between the two countries in culture and education.
