6th Theatre Olympics opens in Beijing

You and Me, a Peking Opera directed by the famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou, debuts following the opening ceremony for the 6th Theatre Olympics at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Nov 1, 2014.

The 6th Theatre Olympics kicked off at the National Center for the Performing Arts in China's capital of Beijing on Saturday.

The opening ceremony was attended by Cai Fuchao, director of the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), Li Wei, minister of the Propaganda Department of Beijing Municipal government, and Theodoros Terzopoulos, chairman of the Internation Committee of Theatre Olympics, as well as other celebrities in arts circles.

You and Me, a Peking Opera directed by the famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou, made its debut following the opening ceremony.

Later, 45 outstanding dramas from 22 countries and regions around the world will be staged from Nov 1 to Dec 25, including Hamlet, Prometheus Bound, Cyrano de Bergerac and The Sound of Music.

Chinese characteristics will also be added up to this year's Theatre Olympics to introduce Chinese traditional plays to the whole world.

Previous Theatre Olympics have been held in Athens, Shizuoka, Moscow, Istanbul and Seoul since its launch in Delphi, Greece in 1993.
