Masterpiece: NO.186 in Wenming Road

It is a unique and interesting architectural style in and to the south of China, with one or more round holes on the parapet wall, which were originally meant to prevent the building from the strong typhoon. Buildings of this styles can be found along Haizhu Road or Wenming Road.

Ancient Roman Style

Materpiece: Xinhua Hotel

Though not commonly seen in other cities, quite many Qilou building of this style can be found in Guangzhou, among which Xinhua Hotel is a materpiece. The pillars on the first floor are arcade, and the part between two arcades is dotted with whirlpool-like decorations

Baroque Revival Style

Masterpiece: NO.114 Wanfu Road

It is the most commonly employed style in Qilou buildings in Southeat Asia and in southern cities of our country. Different from the Baroque-style buildings of the 17th century with all the curves and trivial details, buildings of this style feature a stable structure with some Baroque decorations. As to the Guangzhou Qilou buildings, Baroque decorations are mainly used to embellish the parapet wall curves. They can be found along Shangxiajiu Road, Longjin West Road, and Wanfu Road.

Modern Style

Masterpiece: Along Taikang Road

This type of Qilou buildings were built in the 1980s, so they differ from the traditional Qilou builidings in size, structure, material and designing style. Generally, these modern building abandoned those complex decorations and were built in a more simple and practical way.

 

Chinese Traditional Style

Masterpiece: NO.139 Dezheng South Road

This type of Qilou buildings are typical of the traditional residential buildings in southern China, with a shaded corridor covering the sidewalk and two or three windows on the front side but no decorations. They are only sparsely distributed along Nanhua Road, Tongfu Road, Wanfu Road and Qiyi Road.
