Founded in 1948, the Chengde Drama Troupe of Hebei Province has so far produced about 200 new dramas including Qingsong Peak, Dowager Ci Xi, Imperial Concubine Yi, Panchen Lama's Eastern Journey, Thirteenth Dalai Lama, Green Grass, Yellow Grass, On-the-spot meeting at a wedding, Director Niu Goes Home. Some of them have garnered the Wenhua, Plum Blossom, Golden Lion, Fine Horse and Peacock awards for excellent dramas. On January 1, 1998, the Troupe attended the Sixteenth Hong Kong International Art Festival with its Imperial Concubine Yi and Panchen Lama's Eastern Journey. In 1995, the Troupe's Dowager Ci Xi, choreographed by a Japanese artist, was staged in Tokyo for 40 well-received shows. In late 1998, The Hadj won the first awards for outstanding screenplay, directing, choreography and performance during the Fifth Hebei Provincial Drama Festival. The story of Qingsong Peak was twice adapted into films and the TV production of Imperial Concubine Yi attracted widespread attention when broadcast in European and Eastern Asian countries. The artistic film titled Panchen Lama's Eastern Journey has been shown in more than 140 foreign countries and regions.
The Chengde Drama Troupe of Hebei Province has cultivated a contingent of talented artists, including playwright Sun Demin, Performing artist Li Rntang, Yang Zengguang, Yang Benan, Wang Fumin, Li Shunan, Wang Shuiying, Tang Feiling, Jiang Baoying, and Wang Xiaoying, directors Xu Zigang, Chen Wenting, Wang Meigang, and Han Yipeng, choreographers Li Ke, Du Chunfu, Yu Yannian and Gao Shukang, among others. They have contributed greatly to the formation of the unique mountain villa drama style characterized by its freshness, simplicity and strong local flavor.
