With the preparations beginning in April 1981, the Social Conservatory of Music was finally set up in December 1984 in
Beijing. Initiated by the Central Philharmonic Orchestra and associated with the Central Folk Orchestra of China and the Opera and Drama Theatre of China, the conservatory subsidized the central philharmonic orchestra. The two combined entities are now called the Central Philharmonic Orchestra Social Conservatory of Music under the administration of the Art Bureau of the Ministry of Culture.-- Establishment
The conservatory has departments in vocal music, instrumental music (including piano), opera performance and folk instrumental music. Students are mainly young actors, instrumentalists, music teachers and art groups under the direct administration of the Ministry of Cultural inBeijing, instructors from cultural centers and labor unions and a few amateurs and people waiting for employment. The president of the conservatory is Li Zhenyuan.
