Museum of Zhelimu Prefecture

Museum of Zhelimu Prefecture, located at Tongliao City of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region and founded in May 1975, is a local historical museum of China, one of the earliest museums founded in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region.

The Museum covers an area of over 20,000 square meters with 5,500 square metersof floor space. It has collected 6,300 pieces (sets) of relics, mainly the relics of minority nationalities living in the North through the ages with the relics from theZhongyuan(the Central Plains comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River) through the ages as subsidiary. The rare collections include the jade carving with the pattern of two deer from the Xia Dynasty (c.2100-c.1600BC) or Shang Dynasty (c.1100-771BC), the plate with the pattern of a gold mythical animal from the Wei (220-265) of the Three Kingdoms or the Jin Dynasty (265-420), the tri-colored pot from the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), the celedon pot and vase from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and the silver cinerary casket in the shape of a temple unearthed from the tomb of a princess in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The basic displays of the Museum are the Brief Ancient History of Zhelimu Prefecture, the Mural on the Liao (916-1125) Tomb at Kulun, the Collection of Exquisite Relics from Past Dynasties and the Revolutionary Martyrs of Zhelimu Prefecture.

The collections of the four basic exhibitions reflect a brief history of the ZhelimuMengfrom the primitive society to the founding of the People's Republic of China, giving an introduction successively to the activities of the nationalities of Dongwu, Wuhuan, Xianpi, Xianbei, Qidan, Nuzhen, Mongol and Han in the area of Zhelimu Prefecture. The Museum runs a periodical entitledNewsletters of Zhelimu Relics.
