Suzhou Museum

The Suzhou Museum is situated at the Northeast Road of Suzhou City in Jiangsu Province, at the site of the Residence of Li Xiucheng, a leader of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Uprising. Covering a space of 8,000 square meters, the Museum is divided into three lines: east, west and central. It's one of the important cultural relics units under the state protection.

The Museum houses more than 15,000 cultural relics, with a collection of paintings, calligraphy, ceramics and other artifacts, among which there are 247 pieces of the first grade, more than 70,000 volumes of documents and over 20,000 inscriptions. The paintings include works of many famous painters during the Song to Qing dynasties (960-1911), such as the Great Four of Wumen (a painting school) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and theEight Eccentric Painters of Yangzhou, the porcelains include Lotus Celadon Bowl of Yue kiln produced in the Five Dynasty (907-960), and the excavations include Buddhist works discovered in Huqiu and Ruiguang towers, embroidery, etc.

There are a space of 2,200 square meters for exhibition, and the basic exhibitions include Suzhou History Display spanning the Paleolithic Age (20,000BP) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), showing three development peaks of Suzhou's economy in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476BC), the Tang and Song dynasties (618-1279), the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), as well as the gestation of capitalism in the Ming and Qing period.
