TheJilin City Museum, located at Jilin City of Jilin Province, is a local comprehensive museum of China. It used to be the Jilin City Exhibition Hall. In 1962, it was turned into the Jilin City Museum.
The Museum, composed of 22 rooms, has one exhibition hall covering a space of 3,456 square meters. It has collected over 20,000 items of collection, most of which are local relic samples, including the various kinds of relics left from the Neolithic Age, the bronze age, Han, Fuyu, Gaojuli, Wuji, Bohai, Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing, the modern times and contemporary age. Most of the archeological items are the collections from the Xituanshan Culture, most of the relics handed down from the ancient times are those of the Manchu ethnic minority in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The meteorite shower ofJilincollected in the Museum features the natural samples and is the best known in the world.
On display in the Museum are the Meteorite Shower of Jilin and the Exhibition of the Ancient History of Jilin Area. The latter, with the assistance of large amount of relics and auxiliary materials, gives a brief introduction to the development of the 5,000 years from the Neolithic Age to the founding ofWulaCityin the year of 1673 in the Qing Dynasty. The Museum has held scores of temporary exhibitions, such as the Urban Construction of Jilin, the China Currencies in the History and the Unearthed Relics from Mawangdui atChangsha.
