The Nanyue King's Tomb Museum, located in Jiefang Road in Guangzhou City of Guangdong Province, was opened to the public in October 1989.
Discovered in 1983, the Nanyue King's Tomb of the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) is the earliest large-scale painted stone-chamber tomb ever found in south of the Five Ridges.
The tomb was originally 20 meters under Elephant Hill. More than 1,000 funerary objects were excavated, among which the especially important ones are the 200-odd jade articles and 500 bronze wares that feature the characteristics of the Nanyue (Southern Yue) Culture, Chu culture and the Han culture in the Central Plains.
The museum has three basic displays: the original site of the tomb, excavations from the Nanyue King's Tomb arranged in the restored seven tomb chambers, and the history records of the Nanyue Kingdom.
Besides some archeological finds excavated in suburban areas of Guangdong Province after the founding of the People's Republic, the more than 1,000 funeral objects are the most important treasures in the museum, including 23 seals (3 gold seals), a chariot, gold and silver vessels, 3 sets of musical instruments, and so on.
