The Front-line Modern Drama Troupe, attached to the Political department of the Nanjing Military Region of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was founded in May 1955.

Over the past 40 year since its founding, the art troupe has created and staged more than 60 large-scale modern dramas and has won several kinds of awards. The modern drama Yang Gensi won the top prizes for performance and stage design during the First All-China Modern Drama Competition.

Prelude to the East March won the Excellent Drama Award, as a dedication to the 10th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Guards under the Neon Light, Sound Spring and I am A Soldier won Artistic Creation Award issued by the PLA General Political Department. Diary of Director Song won the First PLA Culture and Art Award. Fighting Against the sky won the Wenhua Grand Award and Wenhua individual awards in screenplay; directing and stage design and also won the Special Award in the 6th All-Army Culture and Art Competition. In 1997, the art troupe created and staged Tiger Occupies the Zhongshan Mountain which won the Wenhua Award of Excellent Drama, Splendid Drama Award of the 5th Drama Festival when the 90th Anniversary of Chinese Modern Drama Movement was celebrated. Among the more than 20 awards won are the PLA Culture and Art Award, Wenhua Screenplay, Award, Wenhua Performance Award, Cao Yu Drama Literature Award, Plum Blossom Award, and White Magnolia Award. Some of the art troupe's dramas were adapted into also such as Prelude to the East March, Guards under the Neon Light, Fighting Across the Country, Tales of Liubao, Beautiful Motherland, Intimate Brothers, Cuckoo Sings Again, Second Spring, Conflict within Heart and Tiger Occupies the Zhongshan Mountain.

In 1985,the art troupe has established its own TV Art Center which has produced about 100 TV series, some of which own the top Feitian Award and All-Army TV Series Golden Star Award, such as The Battle in East Henan, Black Ocean, There Is A Sea on the Other Side of the Mountain, Silver Coin with a Bullet-hit Hole, Summer Stories and Tiger Occupies the Zhongshan Mountain.

Famous artists with the art troupe include Shao Jinlin, Jiang Xiaoqin, Yao Yuan, Deng Hainan, Pan Xiping, Dong Kaiyan, Chen Guodian, Cheng Jianxun, Fang Xinhua, Ning Xiaozhi and Tao Huimin.
