Solider Modern Drama Troupe of the Political Department of Guangzhou Military Region

The Soldier Modern Drama Troupe of the Political Department of Guangzhou Military Region of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was founded in May 1955.

Since its founding, the Soldier Modern Drama Troupe has put to the stage a number of plays, causing great sensation in and out of the Army. The Troupe has also been awarded for several times. For instance, in 1956, Safeguarding Peace won the 1^stPrize in the 1^stNational Modern Dramas including Battle Songs in the South Sea, Song of Red Tassel, Great Wall in the South Sea, Heroic Engineer, Leader of Soldiers, Furious Tide in the South Sea and etc., among which, Great Wall in the South Sea won the 1964 Ministry of Culture Award for Outstanding Script. Around 1978, the Troupe performed thunderbolt in Autumn Harvest: Wind and Thunder in China, Ouyang Hai, Going North, Defense of Motherland, Karl Marx in London, Wind in the South China and etc. Among these plays, Thunderbolt in Autumn Harvest won the Script Award and Performance Award in the 4th Art Army Art Gala Performance; Wind and Thunder in China seized the first prize in the 30^thNational Day Anniversary Gala performance; Defense of Motherland won the Liberation Army Culture art Award. In 1985, Great Trend and Jiu Jiu Grass won the performance Award of the 5th All Army An Performance Gathering. Great Trend also became the winner of the 1988 National Award for Good Script. Elegance of Heroic Sacrifice was invited to the 3th National Day Anniversary Party in Beijing in 1988. In 1992, the Troupe participated in the 6th All Army Art Gala Performance, in which drama Under the Skyscraper got the Second Prize. In the art six months of 1997, the Troupe produced a big drama Bugle in Metropolis, which became the winner of the First Prize for New Play in All Army Competition and Cao Yu Theatrical Literature Award. Emperor Song's Platform was produced in the second half of 1997 in celebration of the return of Hong Kong. This play won the Cao Yu Drama Literature Award and New Play Award in the 5th Drama Festival. In 1998, Born on First of August won the All Army Award for Anti-Flood Play. In aspect of short plays, Compete for Flag and Fantasy won the Silver Award and Good Play Award in the National Comic Short Play Competition respectively. Bald-headed Company Commander was the winner of the 7th Culture Ministry Wenhua Award for New Play. Haggle Over Every Ounce won the First prize in the All Army Short Play Competition.

In recent years, the TV Art Center under the Troupe produced a number of TV plays including Driver's Sonata, Return of a Soldier, Eagle of Nansha Islands, Waiting for Tomorrow and etc. All of them have won the All Army Awards for Good Military TV plays. Moreover, the Troupe has produced movies Dong Cunrui, The Red Detachment of Women, Faith to the Sea, We are the 8^thRoute Army, Woman Soldier and novels The Story of Dong Cunrui and Ode to Ouyang Hai.

In 1990, the Troupe visited Bulgaria.

The Troupe has fostered many influential writers, directors, actors, actresses and setting designers. For example: Zhao Huan, Lu Jilan, Teng Ying, Pang Jiaxing, Xia Liye, Qu Fenfen, Zhang Yechuan are all winners of China Modern Drama Gold Lion Awards. Lu Zhiqi and Zhang Teng won the Plum Blossom Drama Awards. The Troupe also has first grade scenarist Tang Dong, Pu Xun and others.
