The Changchun Modern Drama Theater was founded in 1956 by merging the Jiliao Military Region Roar Drama Troupe with the Changchun Art Troupe. It has an Actors' Drama Troupe and a Children's Art Troupe as its subsidiaries.
Since its founding, the Theater has produced more than 400 stage dramas and plays, classical and modern, native and foreign. In the1950's, the Theater created the Red Ribbon Dance, which was awarded the gold prize in a world Youth Festival. One-act plays Struggle Out, Two Minds and Morning won several awards in the first National Modern Drama Festival in 1956. At the end of the 1970's, the Theater produced new plays including Save Her Life, Ji Hongchang, Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Grain Field is Our Tent. At the 30th National Day Ceremony, the drama Ji Hongchang was awarded the First Prize in Acting and the Second Prize in Play Creation, while Save Her Life was awarded the First prize in Play Creation and the Second Prize in Acting. In 1980's and 1990's, more plays with high qualities were produced, including An Imminent 100-year-old, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Marriage of the Old Son, When the Chinese Sorghum is Red, Sweetheart Unexpected, and children's plays such as: Bright Heart, Light of Hope and Children in the Forest. Light of Hope was given the New Play Award of the 6th Wenhua Award sponsored by the Ministry of Culture.
At present, the Theater has a number of famous artists including Wang Changjian, Wang Xu, Lu Qifeng, Shi Xianfu, Jia Shuyun, Zheng Kunfan, Luo Ji, Tao Zihou, Yang Xiufen, Yu Dan and Li Li.
