The temple was originally built in 1316. The fourth Panchen Lama incorporated the temple as a branch of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in 1613.
The Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is now seat to the Panchen Lama, the second-most important spiritual leader of Tibet.
