East meets West in art exhibition
Chinese-born American artist Jian Guo Xu's solo exhibition opened in the National Museum of China on Oct 18. The exhibition, Beyond Contemporary Art: The Artistic Vision of Jian Guo Xu, showcases more than 50 pieces of Xu's work in the form of painting, installations and multimedia. Xu, 62, has spent the past 29 years in the US. He is known for his works that bridge Eastern and Western cultures by fusing Chinese ink painting with Western fine arts.

Paintings to go under hammer
Beijing auction house Wenjinge will present an exhibition of five Chinese art connoisseurs. The group Xie Zhiliu, Qi Gong, Xu Bangda, Yang Renkai and Liu Jiu'an were founded in 1983. They spent eight years and traveled thousands of miles all over China, making systematic studies of surviving ancient paintings and calligraphy. This is the first time their own creations are presented in one exhibition and then auction. The exhibits will be auctioned at the Westin Hotel Jinmao in Beijing on Nov 19.

Boys' choir in China debut
The Dresdner Kreuzchor boys' choir, with a seven-century history and now boasting about 150 members aged between 9 and 19, will make its China concert debut. The choir will present its repertoire of early baroque, the early 19th century and modern works.

Fan paintings on display
An exhibition of ancient Chinese paintings on folding fans is being held. Council Auctions Co. Ltd will present the exhibits on auction in Beijing in early December. More than 100 pieces belonged to the collection of Jiashutang in the 17th century, and feature diverse styles and subjects. Fan painting was at its peak in the 16th-17th century. Among the exhibits are works from great masters such as Wen Zhengming, Zhu Yunming, Shen Zhou and Dong Qichang.

GUANGZHOU
Sarah Chang channels Barber
Korean-American classical violinist Sarah Chang is collaborating with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra to stage the only violin concerto by US composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981). One of the most famous violin concertos of the 20th century, it unfolds its first two movements with silky melodies but dramatizes in the third movement which must be played by a violinist with superb technique.

Hungarian brass
Heralded Hungarian trumpeter Gabor Boldoczki will stage a concert with a repertoire spanning from Torelli to Bach, Handel, Mozart, Donizetti and Bartok in Guangzhou today. Accompanying Boldoczki is the Hungarian Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, one of the most famous ensembles from Central Europe.
