With the Chinese new year approaching, anticipation is building for CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala, or chunwan. The spectacle is the most watched variety show in China.
On the night of December 21, the show went through its 5th auditions, and this time, six troupes from Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, Hainan, and Liaoning provinces, as well as Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, took to the stage.
Dressed in traditional costumes, artists from Sichuan province performed a passionate drum dance, a national intangible cultural heritage. This performance won rapturous applause from the audience. But surprisingly, all the performers are amateurs.
Artists from Yunnan province brought some Buddhist culture to the stage. Their dance showed the growing process of a group of young monks.
And Tibetan artists from Qinghai transported the audience to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with their rough and powerful dance moves.
Next, a modern dance presented by artists from Hainan tells a story of how local fishermen overcome difficulties to make a living at sea.
For some light relief, comedians from Liaoning amused the audience with a short sketch. Followed by an acrobatics show performed by acrobats from Xinjiang, wrapping up an eclectic mix of performers all vying for a place in the annual event.
