East Lake Park is located at the site of “The Fragrant Lotus on the East Lake”, one of the old Eight Views of Quanzhou. The lotus flowers that were planted made it a famous place of interest with the name “Lotus Fragrance on the Xing Lake”. In the Tang dynasty it was well-known for the presence of the celebrities Jiang Gongfu, Han Yu and Ouyang Zhan. Twenty landscapes composed of plants and mountain rocks in fantastic shapes were carefully sculptured and scattered in the entire park, demonstrating the stone culture of Southern Fujian. Some quiet spots were constructed such as the Lotus Fragrance on the Star-Lake , the Tower Praying for Smooth Wind, The Seven-Stars Surrounding the Moon, Sangong Pavilion, the East Lake Pavilion, the Boen Pavilion and the Langu Pavilion. These contrast with dynamic spots such as Children’s Playground, the Two Boats Facing the Sun and the marina. It has won the titles of “The Ten Structures that the Citizens Love Best” and “The Ten Nicest Night Views in Quanzhou”. It has been granted the provincial “Award for Excellent Environment” three times in succession. In 1998 it was listed in the “A Hundred Celebrated Parks of China” for its southern garden style, elegant, delicate and colorful.
West Lake Park is located in the north-west of the city proper, at the southern foot of Qingyuan Hill. It was called the “North-west Ocean” which was composed of three famous bridges, three sections of water and four small isles, covering an area of 100 hectares. The water occupies 82.28 hectares, the square and roads take 1.72 hectares and green space 16 hectares. There are more than 200 species of trees. West-Lake Park, with flowers blossoming like a piece of brocade and the ripples shining like silver chains, connects naturally to the Qingyuan Hill. It makes the green mountains and the shimmering water contrast and complement each other, appealing to tourists with its garden beauty. It is now an excellent ecological lake park. In December 2001, it was honored as "Model of Chinese Residential Environment " by the Ministry of Construction.
