Pair of Children’s Chairs (Pair)
This pair of children’s chairs has a back frame in the Southern Official hat style. The seat is made of a solid plank of wood. The aprons are done in the traditional Jin style with the trailing plant motif as decoration.
Low Kang Cabinet
This small “Kang” cabinet was specially designed to be placed on top of a “Kang” – a traditional brick bed found in Northern China. A Kang bed usually occupies one third to one half a room and is about 3 feet in height. Therefore the furniture keeps on top of a “Kang” is normally low compared to normal furniture. This “Kang” cabinet was placed on one side of a Kang for storing sheets and blankets. The aprons are decorated with trailing plants. The metal work is in the design of a bat. Both trailing plants and bats are used as auspicious symbols for youthfulness and fortune.
Altar Table
This table is of typical North Suzhou style which keeps the traditional Ming style and craftsmanship similar to Northern Furniture. The front apron has a drawer. The spandrels are in the shape of trailing plants with a slight touch of relief carving decoration. The table top is supported with braces which tenoned joints exposed on the front. A small flange is found on each side to hide the end grains of the wood. The front and the back legs are supported with double stretchers.
