The inner beauty of Chinese Traditional costumes: What the concubines wore in The Tale of Zhen Huan TV series
The hottest TV series on air is currently The Tale of Zhen Huan. Adapted from a novel with the same name, this series tells the story of how a naïve girl became a sophisticated concubine in the palace. It reflects the life of ancient Chinese concubines and involves the craze of royal court drama. The classic dialogue of the characters and their gorgeous costumes have become the subjects of heated discussion.
Mezhuang first tasted the Palace: cautious and low key
Shen Meizhuang was Zhen Huan’s best friend and only companion in the palace. She enjoyed a higher status than Zhen Huan when she first entered the palace, but she knew that as a new face, she had to be cautious in order to survive the white war between women. She chose a special hairstyle called the “Liangbatou” (to wear the hair in a bun or coil, with an upraising tail in the shape of a horizontal line), and decorated it with silver hairpins and turquoise to make her look unsophisticated. This costume in aristocratic Man style was pink but left us with the impression of deliberately made old.
Meizhuan in favor: Pink silk stressed her temperament
Shen Meizhuang was a big fan of plain colors. Even in her peak time, proud Shen Meizhuang didn’t choose red or other bright color to wear. Instead, she choose a pink silk Man costume. The pink and purple camellias made her look gentle and elegant, her hairstly was dalachi ( a hair style designed by Cixi the empress dowager, similar to liangbatou but larger, with an uprising tail in the shape of a fan) ,decorated with silk ribbon and bead and flowers. The pink fringe echoed well with the red silk ribbon on dalachi.
