The guqin was invented more than 3,000 years ago. In 2005, the guqin was approved as "Representative Work of Human Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO. The first sound heard at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony was from the guqin.
The guqin in China is just like the lute in the West. The stringed instrument played an important role in traditional Chinese aristocrats' lives. Those ancient aristocrats passed on the culture of guqin.
Wang Yongchang, a master of the guqin, spoke with China Daily on the history, spirit and culture of the guqin.
