The 863 Plan, issued in March of 1986, is one of the China's largest scientific engineering project since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The plan designated eight fields of advanced technology as key points for research and development. They are bio-technology, space flight, information technology, laser technology, automation, energy, new materials, and marine technology. Over the course of more than 20 years, the plan has achieved unparalleled results and profoundly altered China's approach to production and manufacturing.
