The maintenance work on the golden top of Jokhang Temple has been completed in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
The whole project included the renovation work on the golden top of five major temple halls and some roofs, covering an area of 3,743 square meters. More than 4.4 million yuan were spent on renovation and it took three years to complete it.
The management committee of Jokang Temple said the project was the largest of its kind in the history of the temple.
Listed in the world cultural heritage list by UNESCO, the Jokang Temple has a history of more than 1,300 years and is the spiritual center of Tibet.
The most famous and valuable of cultural relics housed inside the temple is the sculpture of Jowo Sakyamuni aged 12.
Large-scale reconstruction and renovation took place under the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama about 300 years ago, and from then on the golden top has become a symbol of the temple.
