Shi says that cultural exchanges between China and South Korea can be dated back to earlier times. The two countries signed the agreement on Sino-South Korean cultural exchanges in March, 1994, which ushered in new stage of sound, stable and rapid development for bilateral cultural exchanges. The culture departments of both countries always maintain close communication with each other, and regularly hold relevant meetings. After President Park Geun-hye visited China in 2013, the China and South Korea Cultural Exchange Joint Committee was established by both countries, further improving official exchanges and cooperation systems.
The governments of both countries offer active support for cultural exchange activities in various forms, including a cultural day, cultural month and cultural year, and also carry out cooperation with multilateral events like the Asian Art Festival.
Person-to-person exchanges also play an important role in extending channels and enriching the content of bilateral cultural exchanges. Over 200 visiting missions are sent to each other’s country every year, with various exchange programs, covering traditional Peking Opera and acrobatics to modern symphony, music drama, and ballet, from small-scale exhibitions of private collection to large-scale ones for national treasures. Thanks to joint efforts by both sides, these cultural exchanges between China and South Korea have made remarkable progress in breadth and depth.
Shi adds that the cooperation on cultural industries has just begun and has broad prospects. In 2008, both countries signed the memorandum to enhance the gaming industry and cultural exchanges. In 2013, the first China and South Korea culture industry forum was held by the ministries of culture of both countries, starting the practical development of the cooperation on the culture industry between the two countries.
“The culture industry of South Korea has made considerable progress since the end of last century,” says Shi. “Given the abundant culture resources and great market potential of China, it is significant to further enhance culture industry exchanges between both countries in order to promote the development of our culture industries.”
