The 31st Weifang International Kite Festival kicked off in the city of Weifang in east China’s Shandong province on April 19, 2014. More than 100 teams from over 60 countries and regions traveled here to fly a variety of kites in Weifang, the world's kite flying captial city.
It coincides with the 10th World Kite Surfing Tournament taking place in the same city. During the eight days of the compitition, 45 teams from 29 countries and regions will showcase their designs and flying skills.
The event has added four new venues for the competition, and a new prize for "most innovative kite" has been created to encourage new designs.
Weifang first launched its kite festival in 1984. The event attracts kite enthusiasts from across the world.
The city is home to Chinese philosopher Mo Di, who lived almost 2,500 years ago and reputedly spent three years making a flying wooden bird--the earliest known kite in history. Today there are more than 100 kite factories in Weifang where many local families hand-make kites in their leisure time.
