Figure painting originated in primitive times, when people painted figures and animals on walls with chalk, red earth and carbon black. The Northern and Southern Dynasties (220-589) marked the maturity of figure painting. Gu Kaizhi, renowned painter and art theorist, has argued that painters should properly depict not only the external shape, but also the internal qualities of the figures.
