With natural landscape as a theme, mountains-and-water paintings is the most significant and influential genre of Chinese painting. It matured during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), much later than figure painting. Since then many masters and masterpieces have appeared and prevailed. This can be attributed to some Chinese cultural factors. Traditional Chinese philosophy argues that mankind is linked with nature, and is born with affection for nature.
